I work directly with corporate energy and utility companies on various real estate related matters, which include large-scale real estate acquisition projects for mining lignite for purposes of generating electricity, including coordination regarding fee purchases and leasing. I also assist with challenges to valuation regarding ad valorem assessments and assist with eminent domain matters. I also represent public agencies of the State of Mississippi regarding public procurement and purchases, including providing counsel regarding bid protests and other corporate governance matters including, without limitation, the Administrative Procedures Act and the Public Records Act. In addition, I assist real estate owners (both individuals and business entities) and financial institutions in commercial closings, litigation regarding easements, heirship confirmation, suits to quiet and confirm title and enforcement or abandonment of condominium, and homeowners' association restrictive covenants. What types of clients do you represent? I most often work with clients that are corporate energy and utility companies and various state agencies. However, I also assist financial institutions and real estate owners (both individuals and business entities) on a variety of transactional and litigation matters. What previous experiences, prior to your work at Balch, influence your practice? Prior to joining Balch, I worked in banking and specialized in consumer and commercial lending. These experiences have influenced my practice by allowing me to have a greater understanding of the lending process and allowed me to gain invaluable experience to a broad array of the financial and legal needs of a variety of businesses and industries. What do you find most exciting about your work? One of the most exciting parts of my job is being a part of the solution for complex legal problems that is the product of joint collaboration amongst our firm's great clients and my colleagues. Select Matters Represent electric utility by conducting due diligence and commercial closings related to large-scale land acquisition program of fee purchases totaling approximately 5,000 acres for purposes of providing a lignite mine used to fuel an electric generation facility. Representation of electric utility assisting with examination of mineral title to surface and subsurface (oil, gas, coal, and lignite) of fee-owned property and assist in the preparation of preliminary mining title opinions related to same. Represent various state agencies in public procurement of service contracts and construction contracts. Representation of electric utility assisting with litigation for eminent domain matters. Representation of industrial and commercial clients making appeals to local governing authorities related to the determination of assessment valuations for purposes of ad valorem taxes. Represented approximately 80 landowners in obtaining a judgment confirming a complex heirship and establishing undivided ownership in privately held land located on Horn Island in Jackson County, Mississippi. Represent various state agencies on matters pertaining to the Administrative Procedures Act and the Public Records Act. Representation of financial institutions related to commercial closings.
