Roberto Devoto is a principal in the Washington, D.C., office of Fish & Richardson P.C. Mr. Devoto has significant experience in patent prosecution management, conducting post-grant proceedings work before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, client counseling, and helping clients establish and grow patent portfolios, including designing and implementing procedures to protect intellectual capital, and formulating company-wide IP strategies and policies.
Mr. Devoto's practice emphasizes electrical subject matter. He has extensive work experience for both Fortune 100 and startup companies involving diverse technologies such as software (including multi-tenant software architectures, cloud computing, single sign-on technologies, spam filtering, e-mail-related technologies, instant messaging technologies, and search processing), business methods, semiconductor device processing, medical devices, multi-touch sensing technologies, display device technologies, microprocessor architectures, digital memory devices, video and audio compression and encoding technologies, and telecommunications technologies. His experience in telecommunications includes Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies, satellite communications technologies (including space-based and ground-based beamforming techniques), Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and contact center communications technologies, and wireless communications technologies (including 2G, 3G, 4G and LTE standards). Mr. Devoto has substantial experience in post-grant proceedings, including post-AIA inter partes review proceedings and pre-AIA ex parte and inter partes reexamination proceedings. Mr. Devoto's experience in client counseling includes freedom to operate, patentability, validity, and infringement opinion letters, and portfolio and due diligence analysis.
Having graduated number one in his class in electrical engineering at the University of Michigan in 1993, Mr. Devoto then obtained a master's degree from MIT in 1996 followed by a law degree from Harvard University in 1999, where he graduated with honors. Mr. Devoto's graduate work at MIT was focused on semiconductor device processing with an emphasis on micromachining technologies. Before beginning his legal career, Roberto worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Co. where he specialized in the telecommunications industry and co-authored an industry analysis report on the long-haul data communications industry titled "Backbone! How Changes in Technology and the Rise of IP Threaten to Disrupt the Long-Haul Telecom Services Industry." Mr. Devoto is also an inventor of U.S. Patent 6,987,847, entitled Communication Device Monitoring.
