Seen as an IP portfolio builder and business partner by his clients, Zack is often called upon to handle the most challenging procedural and substantive issues with an eye towards long term value and cost efficiency. Zack’s streamlined patentability, freedom-to-operate reports, and portfolio charts give clients the tools they need to make key business and IP decisions. Zack Higbee is a registered patent attorney with nearly 10 years of experience practicing all aspects of U.S. and international patent prosecution, review, and IP counseling, as well as advising on IP licensing and transactional matters, copyright, open source, and trade secret issues. He works with client principals and team members to identify, harvest, and protect valuable IP with forward-looking, cost-effective strategies. Zack regularly leads patentability and freedom to operate analyses, prepares opinions, and provides engineering design and strategic portfolio analysis and recommendations that help pre-emptively avoid issues with competing IP. With a background in mechanical engineering and economics, and practical experience in medical device research, robot design, and software systems engineering, Zack often handles high-stakes, interdisciplinary cases that integrate disparate technological fields and legal disciplines for the most technologically and legally holistic approach to IP protection for some of the largest companies in the world. Zack received his J.D., with honors, from The George Washington University, where he was a member of the AIPLA Quarterly Journal. Before pursuing a career in law, Zack earned a dual B.S. both in mechanical engineering and in business economics and management from Caltech, where he was also a decathlete and captain of the track and field team.
