David Franklin Sawrie

Adams and Reese LLP, Special Counsel

Nashville, Tennessee

The complexities around patent law can be burdensome for companies looking to launch and grow, so it is important they have a strategic IP partner that allows them to focus on the bottom line. I strive to add true value to clients' patent portfolios by leveraging my engineering background and expertise in intellectual property law. Doing so informs my ability to develop a unique, competitive patent roadmap for each client, establish solid and defensible patent portfolios, and execute on their patent strategies. David Sawrie, Ph.D., has a global intellectual property and patent law practice, in which he applies his education and working background in electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and computer science to help clients design and execute their patent roadmaps. With significant experience practicing patent law in both Tennessee and Silicon Valley, David represents start-ups, early-stage technology companies, and multinational corporations. His practice emphasizes all aspects of strategic development and management of worldwide patent portfolios, domestic and international patent preparation and prosecution, patent analysis, and IP counseling. David assists clients in all industries, with particular experience in electrical arts, mechanical, and medical devices. He handles IP issues in a broad range of technologies, including electrical animal containment systems; digital signal processing; electrical circuits; mobile devices; database-backed web applications; operating systems; wireless networks; encryption; machine learning; fraud analytics; global positioning systems; and more. David provides patent counsel and strategy in post-grant review proceedings, including patent reexamination and inter partes review, drafting post-grant proceeding petitions and responses. He drafts United States and international patent applications and assists clients in managing patent prosecution duties across multiple portfolios, perfection of patent rights, preparation of portfolio summaries, response to diligence requests, and docketing. Additionally, he delivers analytical support in complex patent litigation matters, conducting infringement analysis and doing diligence patent file histories. David's career includes having practiced at the Am Law 50 firm of Perkins Coie LLP in Silicon Valley, where he counseled emerging growth technology companies in corporate governance matters, private placement financings, and key liquidation events, and at Sherrard & Roe PLC, where he practiced in the areas of corporate representation, employment, and real estate. David earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law. After several years of practicing law, he sought additional training in the fields of math and science, completing a Ph.D. in Biostatistics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During his doctoral training, he worked as a health care outcomes research scientist, conducting statistical analyses and providing data management support in clinical trials ranging from small sample studies to a large multicenter Phase III clinical trial. While pursuing his research in statistical methods, David completed a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. David also holds a Master's in German Studies from Stanford University. He studied abroad at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat in Freiburg in the Southern Black Forest.
