<p><b>Job Title:</b> Assistant State’s Attorney, Special Litigation, Post Conviction</p> <p><b>Reports to</b>: Supervisor of Special Litigation</p> <p><b>Location</b><b>: </b>26th and California</p> <p><b>Bureau</b><b>: </b>Criminal Prosecutions Bureau</p> <p><b>Division/Unit</b><b>: </b>Special Litigation</p> <p><b>Application deadline: 4/19/24</b></p> <p><b>General Description:</b></p> <p>The Special Litigation Bureau of the Cook County State’s Attorney Office is seeking an experienced level Assistant State’s Attorney to join the team.</p> <p><b>Duties/Responsibilities:</b></p> <ul> <li>Obtain records, transcripts, depositions and reports documenting previous and current criminal and civil litigation</li> <li>Generate written briefs requiring research and analytical analysis to determine whether claims have substantive merit</li> <li>Collaborate with other CCSAO Bureaus, including Criminal Prosecutions and Special Prosecutions, Civil Action Bureau and the Criminal Appeals Division to determine acts and sources of any intentional or unintentional wrongdoing in the development and prosecution of these cases</li> <li>Research legal issues and draft motions to dismiss, answers, and other relevant legal documents</li> <li>Present oral arguments and litigate hearings in the trial court</li> <li>Ability to conduct investigations when necessary</li> </ul> <p><b>Minimum Qualifications:</b></p> <ul> <li>Applicants must possess a law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school</li> <li>Be either a member in good standing with the Illinois bar, or eligible for admission to Illinois bar on Motion (reciprocity)</li> <li>At least four (4) years of criminal experience</li> <li>Excellent legal research and legal writing abilities</li> <li>Demonstrate the ability to articulate sound legal arguments both orally and in writing, as well as articulate the rationale for decisions made</li> <li>A solid work ethic and show attention to detail and accountability</li> <li>Ability to work independently as well as be part of a team, including courtroom personnel</li> <li>An understanding of, and a commitment to, transformative justice principles</li> </ul> <p><b>Preferred Qualifications:</b></p> <ul> <li>3 or more years of experience as a practicing attorney</li> <li>Prior criminal law experience, including trial work and legal writing</li> <li>Prior experience as a prosecutor</li> <li>At least five (5) years litigating trials, including bench and jury</li> <li>One to two (1-2) years of appellate or civil litigation</li> </ul> <p><b>Working Environment</b>:</p> <p>In this role, the ASA will review all prior criminal and civil litigation regarding the filed petition and obtain documentation where appropriate. The ASA must ensure supervisors are well-informed of case development and provide supervisors recommendations. The ASA must be able to work independently, have excellent time management skills and be self- initiating. The ASA must be able to effectively apply the mission and values of the CCSAO. Ability to work remote up to one (1) day per week.</p> <p><b>Physical Requirements:</b></p> <p>Light work. Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all these activities.
