Children’s Law Center (CLC) partners with Children’s National Health System, Mary’s Center and Unity Health Care to provide legal services to children and families who have health-harming legal needs. Through the partnership, Children’s Law Center advocates for landlords to adhere to the law and fix housing conditions that harm a child’s health, ensures school systems provide appropriate, quality educational programs to students with disabilities, and holds government agencies and health insurance providers accountable for providing medical necessary services to children. By focusing on critical social determinants of health and working side-by-side with the community, Healthy Together reduces the health inequities and racial disparities that many of our client families face. </div> <div></div> <div> <p><b><br> Job Summary</b></p> </div> <div> The Healthy Together Supervising Attorney is responsible for providing direct supervision of attorney and investigator staff and providing project management and implementation support to allow CLC’s medical legal partnership with community health care institution partners to thrive. Supervising Attorneys help ensure Healthy Together fulfills its primary function of providing high quality legal representation to low-income parents and caregivers where legal solutions are required to address children’s health problems. In addition, the Healthy Together Supervising Attorneys helps ensure program adherence to CLC’s evaluation efforts. </div> <div></div> <div> <br> Healthy Together Supervising Attorneys play a primary role in the development of staff and supervising attorneys within Healthy Together. They directly supervise staff attorneys and investigators. They provide project management and operational support when needed. Supervising Attorneys drive innovation within their areas of expertise. They assist in the growth and/or maintenance of the project with all stakeholders. They also assist with building and solidifying organizational culture and adherence to CLC’s mission. Supervising Attorneys also mentor pro bono attorneys, build relationships with organizational partners and lead specific projects as delegated by the Legal or Program Director. </div> <div></div> <div> <p><b><br> Supervisory Responsibilities</b></p> </div> <ul> <li> Supervises attorneys, investigators.</li> <li> Interviews, hires, and trains new staff.</li> <li> Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.</li> <li> Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.</li> </ul> <div></div> <p><b><br> Job Responsibilities</b></p> <p></p> <div> <br> Case Handling </div> <ul> <li> Provide high-quality direct legal representation in a small number of extended representation cases.</li> <li> Handle and supervise intakes and the provision of brief service, advice, referrals.</li> </ul> <div> Supervision and Personnel Management </div> <ul> <li> Ensure Healthy Together consistently provides high-quality direct legal representation and services to its clients and potential clients.</li> <li> Supervise Healthy Together staff attorneys and investigators pursuant to the Healthy Together Supervision Guidelines.</li> <li> Be responsible for the training, supervision, professional development, and evaluation of supervisees.</li> <li> Ensure organizational and program goals related to data collection, case and intake handling, and timelines are met.</li> <li> Ensure attorneys are spotting and referring cases to the Appellate Team in accordance with the Targeted Appellate Strategy Issue List.</li> </ul> <div> Organizational and Program Leadership </div> <ul> <li> Support the CLC management team in instilling a shared vision and shared values throughout CLC.</li> <li> Together with the Healthy Together Program Director and Legal Director, develop and implement new approaches and legal strategy in Healthy Together, and as appropriate, across all CLC programs.</li> <li> Coordinate with the policy, pro bono, and other in-house direct legal services programs to maximize CLC’s impact.</li> <li> Ensure Healthy Together’s expertise in special education, housing conditions, access to health care law.</li> <li> Help lead Healthy Together evaluation efforts.</li> <li> Work closely with the Policy Program to address the systemic needs of CLC’s clients.</li> <li> Lead innovation in case work and trainings.</li> <li> Encourage supervisee attendance at and participation in one Practice Group pursuant to CLC learning organization goals.</li> </ul> <div> Medical Partner Site Management </div> <ul> <li> Nurture and build relationships with Children’s National, Mary’s Center, Unity and other community health center staff to expand impact of Healthy Together.</li> <li> Monitor deliverables pursuant to grant funding of site where SA is located or where supervisee is located.</li> <li> Provide leadership and oversight of Healthy Together’s provision of consultation, training and technical assistance to healthcare partners in legal needs screening and substantive legal areas.</li> <li> Lead the development of outreach programs geared to caregivers and patient families in client advocacy support and specific legal areas related to children’s health outcomes.</li> </ul> <div> Overall Project Management/Support </div> <ul> <li> Systems development for communication, case handling, etc. as we grow.</li> <li> Evaluation Process Support.</li> <li> Grant support (as needed).</li> <li> Case assignment.</li> </ul> <div> Systemic Work </div> <ul> <li> Attend and participate in community advocate meetings.</li> <li> Work with other legal service providers and other members of the special education and health advocacy communities to address issues relating to practice, collaboration and systemic improvements.</li> <li> Provide support to CLC’s policy team in areas of expertise to address the systemic needs of CLC’s clients.</li> </ul> <div> Pro Bono Support </div> <ul> <li> Mentor pro bono attorneys handling special education and housing conditions cases.</li> <li> Develop and conduct pro bono trainings.</li> <li> Provide mentor guidance and training to other CLC mentors.</li> </ul> <div> <b> Qualifications</b> </div> <ul> <li> 1-2 years’ experience supervising attorneys preferred. Supervising experience can include formal and informal supervision and/or formal mentoring.</li> <li> Strong litigation, legal analysis, research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.</li> <li> Strong organizational, analytic, oral and written communication, and teaching skills.</li> <li> Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively.</li> <li> Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.</li> <li> A demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice.</li> <li> A combination of strong legal skills and knowledge, self-reflection, cultural humility, and leadership skills.</li> <li> Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.</li> </ul> <div> <p><b> Required Skills and Experience</b></p> </div> <ul> <li> JD and DC Bar membership or immediate eligibility to waive in.</li> <li> Substantial experience (at least two years) in or with legal services, preferably with a background in community lawyering, special education, child welfare and/or other legal services matters.</li> <li> Prior litigation experience.</li> </ul> <div> <p><b> Salary and Benefits</b></p> <p> The salary for this position starts at $78,100 annually and goes up with experience. Children’s Law Center offers a generous benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and short- and long-term disability insurance; employer-provided retirement contributions; flexible spending plans; and vacation, sick, holiday, family and medical leave. All employees are expected spend time both working remotely and working in-person from Children's Law Center's office. Mayor Muriel Bowser has required that government employees receive the COVID-19 vaccine and all eligible booster shots or be granted medical or religious exemption from the mandate. Due to some of our grant funding and partnerships, Children’s Law Center must follow this mandate.
