While serving in the position, the Federal Public Defender may not engage in the private practice of law. The salary of the position of Federal Public Defender is equal to the salary of the U.S. Attorney for the district served, currently $176,300.<br> <br> Federal Public Defenders are appointed by the United States Courts of Appeals pursuant to 18 U.S.C. ยง 3006A(g)(2)(A) and regulations of the Judicial Conference of the United States. In accordance with the Criminal Justice Act Plan for the Southern District of Ohio, the Federal Public Defender will provide federal criminal defense services to individuals unable to afford counsel. The office is headquartered in Columbus, with staffed branch offices in Cincinnati and Dayton.
