<div id="jobDescriptionText" class="jobsearch-jobDescriptionText"><div> <div> <div> <b>Description</b> </div> <div> <p>The County Counsel is the chief legal advisor and representative for the County of Santa Clara, including the Board of Supervisors, the County Executive, all County agencies and departments, all County boards and commissions, several special districts, and the Civil Grand Jury. The County Counsel works to understand and further the needs and goals of the Board and the County. The County Counsel oversees the Office’s 110 attorneys’ work in crafting legal strategies, providing legal advice and trainings, drafting and reviewing contracts, analyzing and commenting on legislation, defending the County in all civil litigation and administrative matters, and litigating high-impact cases to advance the County’s goal of achieving social and economic justice for all its residents. Membership in good standing with the California State Bar. This individual should be a team player and possess the creative vision to advance the County’s services. Additionally, this individual will thrive in a high pressure, fast paced, dynamic environment with constantly shifting priorities. Interpersonal skills and the ability to easily relate and adjust to a variety of situations and personalities, and to communicate with staff at all levels of the organization, is a must. <br> <br> <i>Candidates should possess thorough knowledge of:</i> <br> <br> <ul> <li>Principles of civil, constitutional, and administrative law, particularly as it relates to county government, charter counties, and other public agency law.</li> <li>Responsibilities, powers, and statutory limitations of the Office of the County Counsel.</li> <li>Judicial proceedings at the administrative, trial, and appellate levels.</li> <li>Management techniques and skills applicable to a large, public sector professional law office.</li> </ul> <br> <i>In addition, candidates should have demonstrated ability to:</i> <br> <br> <ul> <li>Analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedents and to present such materials orally or in clear written and legal form.</li> <li>Analyze and appraise a variety of legal documents and instruments.</li> <li>Establish and maintain effective working relationships with county and court officials and the public.</li> <li>Supervise and coordinate professionals engaged in work of a legal nature, in a civil service and unionized environment.</li> <li>Work successfully with diverse persons and interests both in government and with the public in general.</li> </ul> <br> A qualified candidate must be an active member in good standing with the California State Bar having a minimum seven (7) years of experience in professional legal work, including or supplemented by three (3) years of practice in government law, and including experience in organizing, coordinating, and directing the administration of professional, administrative, and clerical staff. </div> </div> </div> </div></div>
