Position Overview Patent Agents at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner are responsible for managing valuable patent assets and assessing patent risk for our clients. Patent Agents work under the supervision and guidance of partners in the firm’s Intellectual Property section and perform a variety of patent-related activities, primarily in the areas of patent prosecution, freedom to operate analysis, and due diligence work. Responsibilities Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications on behalf of clients Focus on patent filings, due-diligence, landscape analysis, freedom-to-operate analysis, and validity assessment arising from collaboration with industry partners Support all aspects of Patent litigation, including discovery, depositions, motion practice, and trials Draft responses to rejection of a patent application for an invention from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and other worldwide Patent Offices Work with clients on innovative and cutting-edge technologies to procure patent protection and build IP portfolios Essential Job Specifications/Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to interact professionally with both internal and external clients on all levels Ability to work as part of a global professional team Proven ability to concentrate on the management and pay close attention to the details of projects Establish and maintain internal practices, procedures and technology for coordinating and streamlining patent-related information, filings, and deadlines Demonstrated advanced writing skills with the ability to research information as needed to clearly and concisely communicate ideas to internal and external clients Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with lawyers, firm management, staff and clients one-on-one both verbally and through written correspondence, surveys, memos, etc. Proven project management, organizational, and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects and to meet deadlines Ability to work well under pressure with flexibility and adaptability to changing work priorities, work flow and work assignments Ability to work flexible schedule to accommodate projects as needed, including working evenings or a weekend on occasion Ability to diplomatically provide answers, pushback or to question those in authority for greater clarity or more information, if needed Proven ability to think creatively, using good judgment and decision-making capabilities Supervisory Responsibility This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach for other positions. Travel Minimal travel required for this role. Education/Experience/Certifications Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics or related field Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in patent prosecution Industry experience (or equivalent) in the fields of Software Development/Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and/or Machine Learning is strongly preferred Registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) NOTE: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
