We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment and strongly encourage you to apply.<br> <br> Primary Purpose of the Position<br> The Tort Claims section is seeking an Attorney II to act as defense counsel for the various State agencies named in legal actions brought pursuant to the Tort Claims Act, N.C. General Statutes § 143-291, et seq.<br> <br> Description of Work<br> This position is responsible for defending civil actions for personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice or property damage brought against the Department of Adult Correction pursuant to the Tort Claims Act, N.C. General Statutes § 143-291, et seq. <br> <br> Job functions include investigating claims, drafting responsive pleadings, conducting discovery, and attending all pretrial hearings, trials, and appellate events. Specifically, the attorney must be adept at managing a large caseload, reviewing trial transcripts, researching applicable law, and filing briefs in compliance with the Rules of Appellate Procedure.<br> <br> Other responsibilities will include client outreach and responding on an as-needed basis to queries from the client agencies regarding negligence and risk management issues, speaking at conferences, and teaching workshops for individual clients.<br> <br> This attorney will represent the State before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court in both Tort Claims actions and criminal actions. If decisions made by the Court of Appeals are appealed, the attorney must follow the matter through to final disposition by the Supreme Court.<br> <br> <b>Note to Current State Employees:</b><br> The salary grade for this position is LG07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. Please detail ALL work history including non-state service experience. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.<br> <br> <b>THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $70,732 to $88,119. </b>Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.</p> <p><br> The State of North Carolina offers employer-paid health insurance plus twelve paid holidays, generous vacation and sick leave accrual, dental, vision, and other insurance options, and retirement benefits. Rules of Civil Procedure, the N.C. Rules of Evidence, the Tort Claims Act, the N.C.
