<div id="jobDescriptionText" class="jobsearch-jobDescriptionText"><div> <div> Job Description </div> <div> The Intellectual Property Operations Associate Director will manage a team of legal professionals responsible for managing Vertex’s IP docketing system and annuity system for patents and trademarks. The Associate Director will also provide direct support for invoice management, budgeting, and Intellectual Property portfolio management. The Associate Director will report directly to the Vice President for Intellectual Property and be based in Boston. The position can be either full time in the office or hybrid (3-days in the office). </div> <div></div> <div> <br> Key Duties &amp; Responsibilities </div> <ul> <li> Manage a team of legal professionals responsible for docketing, annuities, filing formalities for domestic and international patent and trademark applications</li> <li> Responsible for implementing projects and efficiencies across the team, partnering with department attorneys and external stakeholders to optimize processes</li> <li> Works closely with department colleagues and DTE on developing the technology solutions for the IP department as well as coordinating the implementation of new solutions</li> <li> Ensures that IP policies and procedures are being followed and met on a day-to-day basis by the group in accordance with established guidelines and practices</li> <li> Oversee the integrity of the docket database, which includes accuracy and compliance with the Rules of Practice as governed by government agencies and within Vertex’s established procedures.</li> <li> Maintain a thorough knowledge of the docket database to create specialized reports and make appropriate changes as necessary</li> <li> Maintain knowledge of USPTO procedural changes; perform research to clarify patent rules; and serve as an expert on IP procedures and regulations</li> <li> Develop training courses for new and existing docketing staff to ensure that the docketing staff are updated on new rules and/or requirements to enable them to complete their day-to-day responsibilities accurately and timely</li> <li> Oversee an annual patent portfolio review working closely with the attorneys and implementing approved portfolio changes in a timely manner</li> <li> Support the annual budgeting process by serving as a coordinator of data gathering in collaboration with the attorneys and external counsel</li> <li> Responsible for supporting engagement and billing inquiries from third-party vendors, including outside counsel</li> </ul> <div></div> <div> <br> Knowledge and Skills </div> <ul> <li> Knowledge of US and foreign patent law practices</li> <li> Excellent time and project management skills</li> <li> Track record of accountability and sound judgment with demonstrable experience taking ownership of issues and providing timely, actionable follow-up</li> <li> Demonstrated ability to be an effective manager</li> <li> Excellent organizational and planning skills</li> <li> Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills</li> </ul> <div></div> <div> <br> Basic Qualifications </div> <ul> <li> Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant experience</li> <li> 8 years of experience in a Law Firm or a Corporation supporting the docketing and management of intellectual property (or at least 12 years if not a holder of an Undergraduate Degree)</li> </ul> <div> Experience with docketing and annuities </div> <div> #LI-SR1 </div> <div></div> <div> Company Information </div> <div> <div> Vertex is a global biotechnology company that invests in scientific innovation. </div> <div></div> <div> Vertex is committed to equal employment opportunity and non-discrimination for all employees and qualified applicants without regard to a person's race, color, sex, gender identity or expression, age, religion, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, marital status, or any characteristic protected under applicable law.
