Smith Gambrell is seeking a highly motivated mid-to-senior associate or counsel to join its Environmental and Sustainability Practice. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience conducting environmental due diligence for real estate and M&A transactions in addition to counseling on complex regulatory compliance and enforcement matters under federal, state, and local environmental programs. This role offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated matters involving regulatory compliance, environmental permitting, site redevelopment, and transactional due diligence across a wide range of industries. Responsibilities Advise clients on federal and state environmental regulatory programs, including RCRA, CERCLA (Superfund), Clean Air Act, and Clean Water Act compliance. Counsel clients on permitting issues relating to the above programs. Assist in the redevelopment of environmentally impacted properties, including Brownfields, corporate transactions, and mergers/acquisitions involving environmental risk. Represent clients in negotiations with regulatory agencies on corrective action plans, cleanup responsibilities, and voluntary remediation agreements. Conduct environmental due diligence in real estate, corporate, and financing transactions, including negotiation of risk allocation provisions. Provide guidance on conservation easements, land use issues, and sustainability-related matters. Support litigation teams on environmental disputes, including Superfund cost recovery and enforcement actions (experience preferred but not required). Qualifications Minimum of 4+ years of environmental regulatory experience in a law firm. J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school with excellent academic credentials. Strong knowledge of RCRA, CERCLA, CWA, and CAA permitting issues; experience with Brownfields and site remediation highly valued. Expertise in drafting and negotiating complex environmental contracts and provisions. Status as an active member in good standing of the state bar in which the attorney resides. Excellent organizational and time management skills, capable of overseeing multiple client matters, deadlines, and shifting priorities effectively. Portable book of business not required. The annual salary range for this position is $225,000-$300,000 depending on the candidate’s geographic market location. Actual base pay within the range will also be dependent on other factors, including but not limited to, relevant experience, internal equity, skills, qualifications, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position is bonus eligible.
