<b>Indiana Legal Services, Inc.</b> <b>\Job Announcement</b> <b>STAFF ATTORNEY</b> <b>CENTRAL INDIANA MEDICAL-LEGAL PARTNERSHIP PROJECT</b> <b>Indianapolis, Indiana</b> <b>ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:</b> Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a statewide, not-for-profit organization that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through 8 branch offices. ILS is funded by the Legal Services Corporation, Indiana Civil Legal Aid Fund, United Ways, Area Agencies on Aging, and approximately 85 other funding sources. The Central Indiana MLP Project is an expanding team that is looking to add a new medical-legal partnership attorney to the group. <b>DURATION: </b>This is a full-time position. <b>JOB SUMMARY:</b> Medical-Legal Partnership attorneys represent patients of our healthcare partners in civil legal court proceedings and other civil legal matters, provide training to health care partners, provide quarterly reports regarding MLP activities, and perform on-site outreach at partner locations throughout central Indiana. The person who fills the Staff Attorney position is responsible for providing substantive legal advice and representation for individuals who have been referred to the medical-legal partnership project. The staff attorney is responsible for cultivating and developing relationships with the staff of the partner organization, including through outreach, presentations, and activity reports. This attorney will work under the direct supervision of the Central Indiana Medical-Legal Partnership Project Director and directing attorney. The position will require some travel within the counties served by the Indianapolis Regional Office and other Indiana counties outside the Indianapolis Regional Office. <br> <b>RESPONSIBILITIES</b>: Among other duties as assigned by the Project Director, the Staff Attorney will: <br> <ul> <li>Complete and review applications for legal services and assess legal issues.</li> <li>Provide legal advice and representation to MLP clients in housing, family law, consumer, public benefits, and other poverty law areas through court representation and written advice letters.</li> </ul> <ul> <li>Draft pro se pleadings and other documents for clients.</li> <li>Supervise assigned law students and volunteers.</li> <li>Cultivate and strengthen relationships with partner organizations and patients, including through the provision of on-site outreach and training.</li> <li>Plan, implement, and staff regular outreach sessions with partner organizations.</li> <li>Develop and maintain networking relationships with local bar associations and with local, state, and federal governments and community agencies that serve our client population.</li> <li>Exhibit a high level of personal energy, organization and commitment to the position and the ILS mission.</li> <li>Successfully balance a healthy case load with all other duties and responsibilities that accompany the position.</li> </ul> <b>QUALIFICATIONS:</b> <ul> <li>J.D. degree after graduation from an ABA-accredited law school and admitted to practice law in Indiana.</li> <li>A demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice and serving disadvantaged populations.</li> <li>At least two (3) years of legal experience post-J.D. is preferred.</li> <li>A valid, Indiana driver’s license and reliable transportation is required.</li> <li>Ability to work independently and to work collaboratively with other members of the MLP team.</li> </ul> <b>SALARY AND BENEFITS:</b> Starting salary is $57,425, with a range up to a maximum of $75,535, depending on experience.
