Avalara’s legal department is looking to add a junior labor and employment attorney to its client-focused group with a strong emphasis on providing exceptional legal advice and advancing the company’s business goals. This team values collaboration, creativity, ownership, and high-quality work product and is dedicated to the professional development of its members. </div> Responsibilities: <div> This new position, Corporate Counsel, Labor &amp; Employment, is responsible for assisting the Sr. Counsel, Labor &amp; Employment, Chief Legal Officer, and People &amp; Culture Team in the management and handling of labor and employment related matters at Avalara. </div> <p></p> <p><br> This position reports to the Sr. Counsel, Labor &amp; Employment, and will have the following key responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li> Advise and assist the People &amp; Culture team with a wide range of employee relations matters including complaints, performance management, investigations, and other disputes; </li> <li>Provide counsel to the Avalara Benefits team on issues such as time off, leaves of absence, accommodations, and retirement/pension.</li> <li> Draft and review employment contracts, severance agreements, and other personnel-related arrangements.<br> </li> <li> Monitor and research labor and employment laws, and stay up-to-date on new and changing regulatory requirements and case law.</li> <li> Review and advise on development and maintenance of employment policies and procedures including those required for compliance with applicable labor and employment laws.</li> <li> Support other members of the legal team, outside counsel, and regional People &amp; Culture partners to develop and revise policies and practices for managing employee-related matters in international jurisdictions where Avalara operates,</li> <li> In performing the job responsibilities, the successful candidate will competently:Assist with immigration matters and data privacy issues on an as-needed basis.</li> <li> Identify and assess legal risks and opportunities within the labor and employment area and advise accordingly,</li> <li> Participate in and influence the decision-making process, with due consideration of legal issues and Avalara’s business needs, and while partnering cross-functionally with various teams across Avalara such as People &amp; Culture, Finance, Payroll, and IT/Security.</li> <li> With limited supervision, handle legal matters and projects, as assigned</li> <li> Analyze risks in uncertain environment, make judgment calls and follow through to execution with limited supervision, while recognizing when to elevate certain matters to the attention of the Chief Legal Officer,</li> <li> Supervise, manage and evaluate outside counsel on employment-related matters.</li> </ul> <p> Avalara attorneys routinely provide direction and work through others and must have the following attributes:</p> <ul> <li> Enthusiastic, intellectually curious, and hard working.</li> <li> Strong team player who enjoys working with and supporting other members of the Legal department and employees across the company.</li> <li> Ability to work independently and take ownership.</li> <li> Excellent verbal and written communication and influence skills.</li> <li> Flexibility to work in multiple legal disciplines and adaptable to changing business needs.</li> <li> Strong analytical skills and judgment.</li> <li> Excellent organization.</li> <li> Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at once.</li> <li> Urgency to follow through and meet deadlines.</li> <li> Desire to facilitate the success of others.</li> </ul> Qualifications: <div> <b> Minimum Qualifications</b> </div> <ul> <li> Law degree from accredited law school.</li> <li> Admission to North Carolina bar and in good standing.</li> <li> Substantive labor and employment experience which may include internships or externships</li> </ul> <div> <b> Preferred Qualifications</b> </div> <ul> <li> Experience in counseling SaaS businesses on labor and employment matters. </li> <li>Experience drafting, revising, and updating employment policies and handbooks.</li> <li> Exposure to ERISA/benefits law, immigration, data privacy, and/or labor and employment matters in EMEA, India, or Brazil.</li> <li> Candidates with an interest in obtaining a deep understanding of Avalara’s SaaS business model and gaining legal experience in other areas of law is a strong plus.</li> </ul> <div> Pay Range Details </div> <div> <br> The base pay range(s) below are provided in compliance with state specific laws. Pay ranges may be <br> different in other locations. </div> <div> <br> Colorado $113,400-$181,400 (annually) <br> Washington $113,400-$200,600 (annually) <br> California $113,400-$219,700 (annually) <br> NYC $137,300-219,700 (annually) </div> <div> <br> The pay range above is the general base pay range for a successful candidate in the state listed.
