Law & Solidarity Economy Practicum Fellow

Georgetown University

Description
<div id="jobDescriptionText" class="jobsearch-jobDescriptionText"><div> <div> Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world. </div> <div></div> <div> Requirements </div> <div></div> <div> Job Overview </div> <div> CREDE leverages multi-sector coalitions in partnership with disinvested communities to close the racial wealth gap and prototype scalable community wealth building strategies. Scholarship, teaching, and community engagement are all oriented around this core focus. Our first initiative focuses on food sovereignty in divested DC area communities suffering from food apartheid (limited access to fresh, nutritious, and affordable food). CREDE seeks to catalyze the development of an ecosystem of cooperatives and solidarity economy enterprises that can produce, process, distribute, retail, and repurpose its own food. CREDE’s premise is that low and moderate income BIPOC communities should be able to sustainably feed themselves and in the process create living wage jobs and community based enterprises that together build wealth for individuals and communities. </div> <div></div> <div> CREDE’s local focus not only allows it to give back to the community it calls home, but also gives students an opportunity to explore and understand the challenges and strengths of the D.C. community beyond the Georgetown Law campus. As D.C. experiences increasing income and wealth inequality, it becomes increasingly important for the Practicum to provide legal assistance to organizations that serve and empower vulnerable D.C. communities. For the foreseeable future, the Practicum will center client matters that are responsive to our national reckoning of anti-Black racism by assisting organizational clients working within those affected communities, primarily Wards 5, 7, and 8. </div> <div></div> <div> Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation </div> <div> The Fellow will report to the Faculty Director, Professor Anthony Cook, and will have at least one CREDE Research Assistant reporting to it. The Fellow will work primarily through the Law and Solidarity Economy Practicum (the Practicum) - CREDE’S community engagement and technical support arm. It offers pro bono transactional legal services to startup and early stage micro enterprises, nonprofit organizations, cooperatives, mutual trusts and other initiatives thought to be part of the solidarity economy movement. Through the Practicum, law students engage in the supervised practice of law for educational credit and assist in strategic and business planning designed to advance local solidarity economies focused on community wealth building and bridging the racial wealth gap. </div> <div></div> <div> As a general matter, CREDE seeks applicants with strong interpersonal skills who are self-motivated, problem solvers with entrepreneurial energy but who can collaborate well with other members of the CREDE team. The Fellow will facilitate growth of the solidarity economy in the D.C. area through outreach, community education and community organizing initiatives. CREDE’s problem-solving approach to community wealth building is interdisciplinary and entails legal, business planning, policy, and community organizing work. The Fellow need not have experience or expertise in all areas, but a willingness and capacity to navigate these fields, orchestrating the engagement of those with expertise needed for particular engagements, would be of immense value. </div> <div></div> <div> Requirements and Qualifications </div> <div> Applicants must have at least 3 years of post J.D. legal experience. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in a transactional area of practice such as community economic development law, cooperatives law, nonprofit law and tax, corporate law, intellectual property, real estate, and finance. Applicants with a strong commitment to economic justice who have experience in community organizing and education, particularly in BIPOC and low income-low wealth communities are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be admitted or willing to be admitted to the District of Columbia Bar. </div> <div></div> <div> For compelling candidates with transactional law experience but not knowledgeable of community economic development and solidarity economy law, CREDE will finance opportunities to develop the expertise needed for the position. </div> <div></div> <div> Application Process </div> <div> Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, email a resume, an official or unofficial law school transcript, and a detailed letter of interest as soon as possible but no later than July 15, 2022. The letter should be no longer than two pages and address a) why you are interested in this fellowship; b) what you can contribute to the Clinic; c) your experience with transactional matters and/or corporate law; and d) anything else that you consider pertinent. </div> <div></div> <div> Please email your application to Alec Soto: as2476@georgetown.edu </div> <div></div> <div> Current Georgetown Employees: </div> <div> If you currently work at Georgetown University, please exit this website and login to GMS ( <div> gms.georgetown.edu </div>) using your Net ID and password.
