**Manager of Innovation in Community Safety**
**Job Summary** :
We are seeking a highly skilled professional who cares deeply about the
pursuit of innovative solutions to the challenges of racism and the pursuit of
racial justice to lead our research and initiatives concerning Innovation in
Community Safety. In this role you will a) help design and develop our ongoing
research efforts to identify and understand innovative solutions to making our
most marginalized communities more fair, safe and equitable; b) manage our
ongoing work on a Model Use of Force Policy; and c) provide oversight of our
place-based research involving innovations in public safety. You will also
engage with Stanford faculty, scholars and researchers to develop additional
research opportunities and partnerships.
**Who We Are**
SCRJ was created in June 2020 in the wake of our country’s deep reflection
about racial divisions and the urgent need for solutions. We are based in the
Law School and serve the entire University. The aspiration of SCRJ is a
multicultural democracy where our ability to create opportunities, promote
wellbeing for all, and advance freedom is not undermined by racism. We seek to
democratize knowledge, catalyze research, improve the nature of public
dialogue, and pursue practical solutions at scale to societal problems rooted
in historical or present-day racism.
**Desired Skills and Qualifications**
We are looking for a dynamic individual who has a record of accomplishments in
developing and implementing policy solutions grounded in research, as well as
excellent academic credentials. In this position you will report to the
Executive Director.
The successful candidate will work to advance a body of research on new
methods and strategies for promoting and enhancing the safety and wellbeing of
America’s most marginalized communities. That research will be used to pursue
the Center’s goal of democratizing knowledge by providing accessible
communications about our research to a wide range of target audiences and
stakeholders.
The Manager of Innovation in Community Safety will also be responsible for our
Model Use of Force Policy, a comprehensive body of work intended to provide
fair, safe and equitable policy materials for use by small and mid-sized
cities aiming to further enhance their use of force practices by co-producing
public safety with police departments and the communities most impacted by
policing. The work will include soliciting feedback from a wide range of
stakeholders about the policy, forming alliances with supporting
organizations, and promoting the overall success of the project.
You will also be responsible for our place-based research on innovation in
community safety with a major U.S. city. This will involve coordination with
Stanford faculty leading a variety of research initiatives in collaboration
with other educational institutions and local jurisdiction stakeholders.
The successful candidate should have knowledge of and familiarity with the
history of racism in the US and its consequences, including income and wealth
disparities, housing and education segregation and disparities, mass
incarceration, violence, and the history of tension and violence between
police and Black communities and other marginalized groups, and contemporary
debates about racial equity and solutions.
**Job Description:**
**Core Duties:***
* Develop and manage research programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to Center stakeholders, and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs.
* Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research.
* Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends, formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the Center.
* Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, and other program activities.
* Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning
* Develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, and partnerships,
* Coach and mentor program staff and student interns.
* **Other Duties** : Other duties consistent with the position may be assigned, including the following:
* Oversight, development and promotion of our Model Use of Force Policy, including soliciting external feedback from a variety of stakeholders, developing alliances and supporters, and promoting the proliferation of the policy.
* Design and oversight of place-based research on innovation in community safety, including coordination with Stanford faculty, city officials, and local institutional stakeholders.
* Create and coordinate programming to engage target constituencies and advance SCRJ’s goals of democratizing knowledge and amplifying ideas and research.
* Assist center staff, scholars, and faculty in translating research and complex ideas into user friendly and accessible programming for target constituencies.

**Minimum Education and Experience Required:**
Law degree, Ph.D. or other relevant graduate degree and at least three years
of relevant work experience, or combination of education, training, and
relevant experience. Knowledge of contemporary policy issues involving safety
and wellbeing of marginalized communities in the U.S., including its racial
dimensions, preferred.
**Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:**
* Ability to develop program partnerships and research collaborations with Stanford faculty, scholars and researchers and other thought leaders.
* Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting knowledge of issues relating to racial equity and racial justice.
* Ability to oversee and direct staff.
**Additional Preferred Skills:**
* Accomplished background in developing and implementing policy solutions grounded in research.
* Collaborative work style, and experience working with teams.
* Experience working with complex ideas and research and ability to translate ideas for different audiences.
* Demonstrated ability to engage with a wide range of constituencies including scholars, researchers, policymakers, community groups, nonprofit leaders and government officials.
**Working Conditions:**
* May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
* May travel locally.
* Occasional overnight travel.
