We advise the Trustees and University Administration on all legal issues and serve as the point of contact on all legal matters involving the University.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div> <h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b> Job Summary</b></h2> <div> <br> <div> <div> </div> <p>The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OVPGC) is seeking a Associate General Counsel to assist with School of Medicine matters.</p> <p> General Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li> Interprets and ensures university compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.</li> <li> Supervises, directs, coordinates, and evaluates the work of outside law firms hired to represent the interests of the university in litigation.</li> <li> Reviews, drafts, negotiates, and approves complex contracts, including but not limited to purchasing agreements, facility use agreements, leases, license agreements, employment contracts, collaboration agreements with high-profile partners, sponsored program agreements, construction contracts, and student internship agreements.</li> <li> Advises departments and units on the development and revision of compliance programs to meet the requirements of new and evolving regulatory requirements.</li> <li> Provides legal advice and counsel to university clients regarding specific legal practice area expertise.</li> <li> Advises departments and units on the information policy. Advises security personnel and campus personnel to respond in accordance with state and federal laws to data breach incidents, provides appropriate notification to regulatory officials and affected individuals, and advises on steps to minimize the risk of future breaches.</li> <li> Manages outside counsel with guidance from Vice President and General Counsel.</li> <li> Advises on university committees and task forces on actions or policies under consideration; provides training and informational sessions on legal areas critical to the mission of the university.</li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div> <h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Qualifications</b></h2> <div> <br> <div> <div> </div> <p>EDUCATION</p> <p><b> Required</b></p> <ul> <li> Juris Doctor degree.</li> </ul> <p> WORK EXPERIENCE</p> <p><b> Required</b></p> <ul> <li> 5 years of legal experience.</li> </ul> <p><b> Preferred</b></p> <ul> <li> Legal experience in health care law and employment law.</li> </ul> <p> LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES</p> <p><b> Required</b></p> <ul> <li> Licensed to practice law in Indiana or eligible for admission to practice law in Indiana</li> <li> Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.</li> </ul> <p> SKILLS</p> <p><b> Required</b></p> <ul> <li> Strong verbal communication and listening skills.</li> <li> Articulate and responsive to colleagues.</li> <li> Effective conflict management skills.</li> <li> Ability to represent the company with external constituents.</li> <li> Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information.</li> <li> Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure.</li> <li> Demonstrates excellent judgment and decision making skills.</li> <li> Excellent organizational skills.</li> <li> Highly thorough and dependable.</li> <li> Maintains a high degree of professionalism.</li> <li> Seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty.</li> <li> Ability to work within tight time frames and meet strict deadlines.</li> <li> Experience in a regulated environment.</li> <li> Performs work independently with minimal supervision.</li> <li> Demonstrated problem solving skills.</li> <li> Ability to work independently without supervision, but recognize when the matter is out of area of expertise.</li> <li> Mastery of at least one area of legal practice (employment, IP, international, First Amendment, construction law, litigation, faculty matters, student matters, research compliance, health care law, etc.).</li> <li> Master at least one area of regulatory compliance.</li> <li> Ability to draft, negotiate and approve contracts.</li> <li> Ability to train University faculty and staff in at least one area of law.</li> <li> Demonstrated skill in avoiding disputes or in positioning the University to resolve litigation quickly.</li> <li> Ability to supervise, train and mentor Legal Fellows and Assistant General Counsel.</li> <li> Demonstrated willingness to pitch-in when colleagues workloads are unmanageable.</li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div> <h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Working Conditions / Demands</b></h2> <div> <br> <div> <div> </div> <p>This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
