The general salary range for this position is $130,000-$158,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education. <br>The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Managing Attorney for the Animal Protection Law department. In this position you will manage the legal staff and legal intervention docket for an assigned practice group of the Animal Protection Law (APL) department to advance organizational Strategic Plan metrics and defend Strategic Plan victories. Manages and ensures the quality of legal and strategic analysis and advice provided by the practice group to staff, departments, and external stakeholders on campaigns, legislation, specialized areas of law, and the most effective tactics to achieve Strategic Plan metrics. <br> <br> <b>This position will be responsible for:</b> <br> <ul> <li>Managing and developing the litigation and other legal intervention docket for an assigned practice group of the APL department in federal courts, state courts, and administrative agencies. Ensures litigation activities are focused and effective to achieve and defend organizational Strategic Plan metrics;</li> <li>Managing litigation activities, including drafting of pleadings, briefs, conducting legal and factual research, and appearing in court. Directing, reviewing, and guiding the drafting and research work of managed staff and preparing staff to appear in court;</li> <li>Managing the practice group’s docket of ongoing and developing requests for investigation, demands for documents, and petitions for enforcement necessary to achieve Strategic Plan metrics;</li> <li>Managing the practice group’s docket of ongoing and developing rulemaking petitions to initiate the regulatory process or amend regulations necessary to achieve Strategic Plan metrics;</li> <li>Providing advice to staff and other departments on legal and policy strategy and campaign tactics and ensuring the practice group’s advice is coordinated and consistent with overall departmental policy. Engaging in cross-departmental planning projects to coordinate related efforts;</li> <li>Assisting senior leadership of the department with the management and development of the overall strategy and operations of the department;</li> <li>Supervising and mentoring attorneys, fellows, and law student clerks in assigned practice group. Ensuring that staff achieve their goals, including developing legal advocacy abilities. Providing staff with guidance and advice, training, performance management, leadership development, and career development;</li> <li>Representing the department and organization at various forums, including in court and in relations with government agencies, counsel, and the public. Advising external stakeholders as needed;</li> <li>Performing other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.</li> </ul> <b>Qualifications and Requirements:</b> <br> <ul> <li>Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school;</li> <li>A minimum of seven (7) years of legal experience required;</li> <li>Supervisory/management experience is strongly preferred;</li> <li>Admission to the bar in at least one applicable jurisdiction or the ability to obtain admission;</li> <li>Ability to manage the development and successfully executing of litigation campaigns to achieve Strategic Plan metrics and goals;</li> <li>Knowledge of the specialized area of the assigned practice group (Farm Animals, Companion Animals, or Wildlife as appropriate);</li> <li>Ability to lead and guide staff to meet departmental and organizational Strategic Plan metrics and goals. Strong knowledge of staff management practices.
