Every person on our team is committed to making commerce better for everyone, and it truly shows.</p> <p><b> About the team</b><br> Within the Shopify Legal Team, the Product Legal Team counsels the business units responsible for developing and building Shopify’s products and services. We provide legal support on innovative new products across a number of different verticals, and our work is challenging, varied, and constantly evolving.</p> <p><b> About You</b><br> We’re looking for a strategic, passionate, and dedicated senior product lawyer. Our ideal candidate is someone who is excited by the idea of being part of a fast-paced legal team and building deep relationships with Shopify’s Product teams.</p> <p> Success at Shopify requires intellect, humility and a sense of humor. You need to take the work seriously, but not take yourself too seriously. The work is fast-paced and intense, so being able to balance that pressure with some levity is important. We care about our work but we also care about each other and having a positive and pleasant work environment. You need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, able to work with many different types of personalities, connect with others, earn their trust, and enjoy working as a team player. In this role, you will handle complicated matters with empathy and professionalism, striking a balance between legal requirements while maintaining our incredible workplace.</p> <p><b> Responsibilities</b></p> <ul> <li> Integrate with a diverse Legal Team responsible for product counseling in connection with Shopify’s broad range of product offerings</li> <li> Advise clients and key stakeholders on complex legal issues, marketing and operational matters, and business strategy; and manage/assess risk in connection with the products you support</li> <li> Proactively manage large-scale projects and ‘go to market’ launches with long-term goals</li> <li> Identify and manage cross-functional strategic initiatives related to products you support</li> <li> Build positive and highly collaborative relationships across Legal Teams at Shopify, including our Commercial Services, Regulatory, Compliance, Privacy, Litigation, Intellectual Property and Trust &amp; Safety teams</li> <li> Advise on the product-impacting aspects of commercial negotiations with strategic partners</li> </ul> </div> <br> <div> Qualifications <br> <ul> <li> A J.D. or L.L.B. with a license to practice law in the United States or in Canada</li> <li> 10+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally having started out at a law firm, followed by substantial in-house experience</li> <li> Substantial experience counseling Product teams on a broad spectrum of applicable legal issues</li> <li> Proven ability to create strategy and vision, as well as manage the execution of work</li> <li> Exceptional business judgment, analytical thinking, problem-solving and relationship-building skills</li> <li> Comfort with ambiguity. We are looking for someone who can collaborate across multiple areas in order to achieve common organizational objectives</li> <li> Capability to work with all levels of different stakeholders, both cross-functionally and globally</li> <li> A desire to work on an agile team providing pragmatic advice and guidance to product, business, and operations teams that are moving very quickly</li> <li> Experience managing external legal counsel</li> <li> Experience working in a high growth organization looking to scale and build</li> </ul> <br> Additional Information <p><br> We know that applying to a new role takes a lot of work and we truly value your time.
