<div id="jobDescriptionText" class="jobsearch-jobDescriptionText" dir="ltr"><div> <div> <div> <b>About the Position</b> </div> <div> <p><b>Career Opportunity</b></p> <p> The City of Las Vegas invites applications for <b>Deputy City Attorney </b>for Criminal Division of the City Attorney's office.</p> <div></div> <div> <b><br> CRIMINAL DIVISION</b> </div> <div> This position represents the City in Las Vegas Municipal Court in all criminal misdemeanor prosecutions that occur within the corporate city limits of the City of Las Vegas, including all associated ancillary legal work. These misdemeanor offenses include, but are not limited to, battery constituting domestic violence, driving under the influence, violation of temporary protective orders, trespassing, misdemeanor drug violations, and traffic violations. </div> <p><b><br> Distinguishing Characteristics</b></p> <p> This series contains an entry level and journey level. Each classification is distinguished by the level of complexity of assigned duties; the judgment and initiative required for the assigned duties; the expertise, accomplishment or specialization in a specific area of law; the level of supervision received; and the degree of knowledge required to satisfactorily carry out the assigned duties. Positions at the journey level are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the entry level; when filled from the outside, selected candidates have prior experience.</p> <p><b> Supervision Received</b></p> <p><b> Deputy City Attorney I</b></p> <p> Receives immediate supervision from the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney. Receives technical and functional supervision from the assigned Deputy City Attorney III or IV acting in the capacity of lead attorney or team chief, or from a higher level Deputy City Attorney.</p> <p></p> <b><br> SELECTION PROCESS:</b> <b> The selection process will include a review of all applications </b> <b>with only the most qualified participating in an interview. </b> <b><i>Final candidate selection will include hiring interview (if applicable).</i></b> <b> Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test and complete background check. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.</b> </div> <br> <p></p> <p></p> <div> <p><b>Essential Functions:</b></p> <p><b> When Assigned to Criminal Division:</b></p> <ul> <li> Represent the City of Las Vegas as a plaintiff in misdemeanor prosecutions in Las Vegas Municipal Court.</li> <li> Screen incoming arrest reports, citations, and requests for prosecution from various law enforcement agencies and make appropriate charging decisions based upon these reports.</li> <li> Review criminal case files at various stages of the criminal justice process, including arraignment, pre-trial and status checks.</li> <li> Evaluate each criminal case assigned to determine an appropriate offer or resolution based upon the nature of the offense, the history of the accused, and the need for public safety.</li> <li> Prepare for and present bench and jury trials in misdemeanor cases in Las Vegas Municipal Court.</li> <li> Prosecute and defend misdemeanor appeals in the Eighth Judicial District Court.</li> <li> Coordinate office activities with those of other departments, outside agencies and organizations; provide staff assistance to the City Attorney; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.</li> <li> Stay current on relevant state statutes, city ordinances, administrative code sections, and case precedents. Attend seminars to keep abreast of new laws and court decisions necessary for the tasks outlined above.</li> </ul> <p><b> Marginal Functions:</b></p> <ul> <li> Participate on a variety of boards and commissions; Rescue, Public Safety, and Municipal Court, currently $1,500/year</li> </ul> <p><br> <b>Retirement</b></p> <ul> <li>Eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after) for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the City's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS.</li> </ul> <p><br> <b>Deferred Compensation Plan</b></p> <ul> <li>The city offers a 457(b) Plan, a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan.
