Job Description | In-House Data Protection Lawyer Department: Risk Department Location: London, Manchester or Liverpool (hybrid working) Role: In-House Data Protection Lawyer The Team The Risk Department provides support to the firm’s senior management and to the wider business, to ensure that the firm develops and maintains the very highest standards of professional conduct, optimally manages risk and ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will work to promote and embed data protection best practice throughout the firm’s global network. The Role The role will be assisting the firm’s Head of Risk, Data Protection Officer (DPO) and Senior Lawyers within the Risk Team on the firm’s internal data privacy compliance globally. The successful candidate will advise on a range of data privacy issues (subject access requests, data breaches, client and supplier terms and firm projects where personal data are involved) supporting our fee earners, partners and business service teams globally. The successful candidate will work closely alongside other in-house lawyers in the firm’s Risk Team and with the firm’s business service teams including our Information Security, IT, Procurement, Operational Security, and HR functions. Key Responsibilities Working closely with the firm’s Senior Data Protection Lawyer, DPO, Head of Risk Management, General Counsel and other risk colleagues to deliver the department’s key data privacy objectives for the year ahead, with a particular focus on data retention and disposal, and data privacy governance/reporting lines. Advising fee earners and support staff daily on a wide range of data privacy issues and the firm’s obligations in relation to the same. Working with the firm’s business support teams on a range of projects with a data privacy element. Reviewing and advising on the data privacy implications of a range of agreements, including client engagement terms, supplier agreements, and other third-party contracts and data sharing agreements. Assessing and responding to data breaches and putting in place containment/mitigation strategies in relation to the same. Assisting in responding to DSARs and other data subject right requests, advising the business and updating our procedures in relation to the same. Assisting in creating and delivering ongoing data privacy training globally, including other awareness raising initiatives across the firm. Assisting in reviewing, monitoring and maintaining a suite of global data privacy policies and procedures. Keeping abreast of privacy law developments and practice in the UK, EU and other jurisdictions in which the firm operates and responding to changes as required. Essential Skills & Experience Qualified data protection lawyer (England & Wales or another jurisdiction) First rate communication skills, including excellent drafting skills and the ability to write persuasively (simplifying and distilling complex issues), alongside excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise effectively with different audiences at varying levels of seniority. Collegiate approach to working as part of a team and collaborating with different parts of our business. Exceptional analytical, organisational and project management skills. Commercial outlook, solutions focussed with the ability to see the bigger picture, whilst also demonstrating a keen attention to detail. Confident in working independently and leading smaller projects with a degree of autonomy, but seeking advice, input and supervision where needed.
