Arnold & Porter is seeking a fully bilingual Spanish-English language Senior Associate based in London to join our successful International Arbitration practice group. The role involves working closely with partners, counsel, and other colleagues across the Firm on high-profile and complex international arbitrations, with a strong focus on investor-State disputes. Competitive candidates will possess extensive post-qualification experience in investor-State and international commercial arbitration, ability to manage all aspects of an arbitration proceeding, excellent written and oral advocacy skills (in both English and Spanish), and a commitment to uphold the Firm´s values, including in relation to collegiality, diversity, and pro bono. The role The role will involve working closely, out of the Firm’s London office, with partners, counsel, and other colleagues across the Firm on high-value, complex investor-State and commercial arbitrations. The successful candidate´s responsibilities will include: Assisting partners and counsel with advising and representing clients in investor-State arbitrations and other public international law disputes, as well as commercial arbitrations; Assisting in the formulation of case theory and strategy; Assuming a key role in the drafting of written submissions and procedural communications, including by managing teams and coordinating with more senior members of the group; Assuming a key role in the preparation and delivery of oral arguments at hearings, and direct and cross-examinations; Conducting and supervising legal research; Managing document production and review processes; Managing the preparation of witness and expert evidence; Liaising directly with clients, witnesses and experts, tribunals, and opposing counsel; Participating in the mentoring and training of more junior members and support staff of the Firm; Meeting the Firm´s targets in relation pro bono work and firm citizenship; Working closely with partners, counsel, and other members of the group on business development initiatives, including in the preparation of pitches, public international law events, and publications. The candidate Competitive candidates will possess: Extensive post-qualification experience in investor-State arbitration working in a law firm, chamber, or international arbitration institution; A strong understanding of the substantive and procedural aspects of investor-State arbitration; Significant public international law academic background and/or professional experience; Strong legal drafting skills, including rigor, accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to effectively structure written work product; Fully bilingual Spanish and English language skills; Strong oral communication and advocacy skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and present a client´s case persuasively before a tribunal; Strong time-management skills, including ability to manage own and others’ work in multiple cases simultaneously, using commercially sound management practices; and Strong interpersonal skills, including a commitment to collegiality and respect for diversity.
