Description
Position responsible for assisting lawyers in various types of litigation and for providing assistance in the preparation of legal documents, research and compilation of data from various legal references as well as the maintenance of case files and meeting minutes. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Gathers, organizes, summaries and indexes documents for various sources for upcoming, pending and potential litigation. Drafts correspondence, discovery requests and responses and other related documents as necessary and assigned. Prepares and maintains trial notebooks and documents to be used at hearings and proceedings. Maintains all initial filings of legal records, briefs and correspondence for the assigned cases. Researches law sources by identifying applicable statues, judicial decisions, and codes. Composes legal abstracts by summarizing depositions, arbitrations, hearings, trials, and other transcripts. SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES: May act as an official Notary Public for the Firm. May perform cite checking and/or bluebooking as assigned. Provides various administrative support duties for the attorneys. Works on special projects and project teams for the Firm as assigned. Contributes to team effort to accomplish related results as needed. Other duties that may be assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and maintain a high standard of ethical conduct. Excellent interpersonal skills are required for interactions with all levels of Firm personnel, clients and vendors. The successful paralegal/case manager detail-oriented and has the ability to multitask. Strong organizing and researching skills are required, which should include Internet researcher; strong client service orientation; excellent communication, and decision-making skills. Must possess and apply a broad basic knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of the law as it applies to the organization. Must demonstrate experience working with the Internet, computer databases, Windows, word processing, database and spreadsheet programs in litigation support, legal research and library applications. Position requires the ability to work independently and as a team player. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school with a certification as a paralegal; at least three to five years of experience, preferably in a law firm or other comparable combination of experience and education. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, documents containing legal terminology or governmental regulations. Ability to draft business correspondence, and reports as assigned, demonstrating excellent English language skills and attention to detail. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from lawyers, clients and employees of the firm. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common factors, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. TECHNICAL SKILLS: Basic knowledge of PC and Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint and Excel and other software programs designed for litigation support. AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Attendance Requirement Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the Firm’s sole discretion. Regular Hours Requirement Must be regularly available and willing to work at least 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week as the Firm determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs. Overtime Requirement Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as the Firm determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs. Weekend and Holiday Requirement Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the Firm determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs. Travel Requirement Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the Firm determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
