The Opportunity We have an opportunity for experienced lawyers with an expertise in Cyber Security and Data Governance to join our growing team in Melbourne. In this role you will work closely with Partner Cameron Whittfield and other leading Partners and senior lawyers across our national group. Cameron has over 25 years’ experience working extensively for clients in Australia and internationally on technology-related legal issues. Cameron specialises in cyber / information security (and incident response), emerging technologies (including blockchain and AI solutions) and technology transactions. Herbert Smith Freehills’ growing global cyber practice is a key strategic choice growth area in our Ambition 2025 strategy. Your day could typically involve: Acting as lead associate on client matters, including drafting and negotiating the preparation of proposals, estimates and pitches. Being part of the cyber leadership team, developing firm strategies and client support programs, advising legal teams, commercial clients, C-suite and directors. Advising on data security, cyber and technology transactions, including managing cyber incidents and cyber resilience, as well as supporting all practice groups and industries on "all things cyber". Working closely with other legal teams across the firm to deliver an integrated service to our clients. Project managing client matters to ensure that key deadlines are met, including working closely with other legal teams across the firm to deliver an integrated service to our clients. Managing and building external client relationships, including assisting with business development activities for key existing clients and new clients. Mentoring junior associates in the team and assisting with providing training to junior associates both in the team and across the firm. To be successful in this role, you will have: Demonstrable private practice or similar experience in TMT specifically advising on data security, cyber and / or technology transactions. Interest in TMT and the intersection of emerging technologies, the digital economy and the law. Admission to practise in Australia or New Zealand. Excellent attention to detail and drafting and negotiation skills. Advanced legal skills, including complex drafting, negotiation and project management skills; strong business development skills and a track record of leading transactions. Full understanding of law firm profitability and key drivers for financial efficiency; and ability to manage costs and budgets. The team: We have one of the largest TMT practices in Australia, bringing together lawyers who advise on matters relating to telecommunications, technology, commercial intellectual property, outsourcing, media and broadcasting, privacy, e-commerce and transitional services. The team also advises on related M&A matters. Our experience and advice spans TMT in its widest sense. Working closely with our telco team, we have a leading cyber, privacy and data protection practice, advising on all aspects of privacy law, information regulation, regulatory compliance matters, data breaches, cyber security, information security, subject access requests, employee monitoring and surveillance, data retention, and compliance with international data protection requirements. Data protection and privacy: we work on many transactions involving the transfer, sharing, mining and analysis of a wide variety of data sources, which inevitably introduces complex data protection issues, from compliance with privacy law to the consideration of multi-jurisdictional data protection requirements. We help clients manage risk appropriately in any endeavours involving the commercialisation of data and acting in compliance with the relevant data protection laws. Cyber and Data Security: full life cycle support: our global and highly experienced, cross-practice team advises on cyber and data security issues wherever they may arise, and simultaneously across multiple jurisdictions where an incident requires it.
