Honigman’s Patent practice is a group of attorneys with extensive experience, specific technical knowledge, and years of industry involvement. As a patent prosecution associate attorney specializing in life sciences, the candidate’s role will involve working with clients in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and healthcare industries to protect and enforce their intellectual property rights. The candidate will understand technical and legal developments across the United States and abroad and thereby be able to plan the most effective business strategies to maximize patent life cycles in relevant markets. Experience in U.S. prosecution is required; experience in foreign prosecution is preferred. Successful candidates will have excellent writing skills, strong academic credentials, and attention to detail. Drafting patent applications: You will work closely with inventors and scientists to understand their inventions and prepare detailed patent applications that meet the requirements of patent law. This involves conducting thorough research, analyzing prior art (existing patents and scientific literature), and translating complex scientific concepts into legally enforceable claims; Prosecuting patent applications: Once a patent application is filed, you will interact with patent examiners at the relevant patent office to negotiate and advocate for the allowance of your client’s patent. This may involve responding to office actions, conducting interviews with examiners, and amending the claims to address any objections or rejections; At least two years of experience drafting and prosecuting life sciences patent applications, either at a law firm or within a corporation; Chemistry (particularly organic chemistry) degrees strongly preferred, but others may be considered, including, in particular, biology or biotechnology degrees; Licensed Illinois, Michigan or Washington, DC attorney in good standing, or ability to become barred in one of these jurisdictions; Candidate must be licensed by USPTO; and Experience with foreign patent prosecution desired. Honigman provides compensation at the market scale, and the current starting salary for first-year associates is $205,000.
