This position will work closely with Innovations General Managers and the Patent Coordinator to provide guidance to the office on all aspects of Intellectual Property, including inventions, patent prosecution, licensing, IP-related government contract issues and other business issues within the Innovations Office. Duties will include advising on inventions evaluation, domestic and foreign patent application filings, management of outside counsel, license review, drafting and negotiation, IP-related government contracts, interruption of laws and regulations, problem resolution, delivering critical communications and training and developing policies and procedures. When you join Cleveland Clinic, you'll be part of a supportive caregiver family that will be united in shared values and purpose to fulfill our promise of being the best place to receive care and the best place to work in healthcare. </div> <div> <p><b> Responsibilities:</b></p> <ul> <li> Monitors all patent-related activities.</li> <li> Works closely with Patent Coordinator for patent prosecution matters.</li> <li> Mentors and works with a designated project team on Intellectual Property projects; advises on legal risks.</li> <li> Advises on federal compliance reporting; interfaces with inventors and outside patent counsel and USPTO as appropriate.</li> <li> Provides internal training for legal requirements regarding Intellectual Property.</li> <li> Analyzes IP Portfolio and works within the department teams to strategize best avenues for IP protection.</li> <li> Works closely with and mentors an assessment team to coordinate prior art searches</li> <li> Prepares coversheet provisional applications and files and/or works with Patent Coordinator to file.</li> <li> Prepare assignments and files.</li> <li> Review Powers of Attorney in partnership with Law Department. </li> <li>Reviews Invention Disclosures with federal funding to determine if they are a subject invention.</li> <li> Serves as a department resource for questions regarding Intellectual Property. </li> <li>Monitors outside counsel for quality patent applications.</li> <li> Does not act as counsel for the department or the enterprise.</li> <li> Other duties as assigned.</li> </ul> <p></p> <p><b> Education:</b></p> <ul> <li> J.D. degree or Patent Agent.</li> <li> Bachelor’s degree.</li> </ul> <p></p> <p><b> Certifications:</b></p> <ul> <li> Passed State Bar if J.D.</li> <li> Passed USPTO Patent Bar.</li> </ul> <p></p> <p><b> Complexity of Work:</b></p> <ul> <li> Requires critical thinking skills and technical writing skills, must be detailed-oriented.</li> <li> Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.</li> </ul> <p></p> <p><b> Work Experience:</b></p> <ul> <li> 5+ years’ experience preparing and prosecuting domestic and international patent applications, preferably in Medical Device and/or Life Science and or computer/software-related art and providing patent ability, validity, and infringement assessments, with a law firm, federal agency or corporation.</li> <li> Combined corporation/law firm experience with IP-Government contracts a plus.</li> </ul> <p></p> <p><b> Physical Requirements:</b></p> <ul> <li> Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.</li> <li> Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.</li> <li> Ability to travel throughout the hospital system and, in some locations, off-site.</li> </ul> <p></p> <p><b> Personal Protective Equipment:</b></p> <ul> <li> Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.</li> </ul> </div> <div> <p><b> Pay Range</b></p> <p> Minimum hourly: $48.99</p> <p> Maximum hourly: $74.71</p> <p> The pay range displayed on this job posting reflects the anticipated range for new hires. While the pay range is displayed as an hourly rate, Cleveland Clinic recruiters will clarify whether the compensation is hourly or salary. A successful candidate's actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate's work history, experience, skill set, and education.
