<div id="jobDescriptionText" class="jobsearch-jobDescriptionText jobsearch-JobComponent-description css-1axw7mm eu4oa1w0"><div> <div> <b>Counsel I</b> <b>-</b> <b>LIT00507</b> </div> <p></p> <div> <p><br> CenterPoint Energy is looking for a <b>Counsel I - Surveying &amp; Right of Way</b> to join our <b>General Counsel Litigation Team,</b> located in <b>Houston, TX</b>.</p> <br> <p> You will have the ability to: <b>be responsible for managing and advising on the Company’s surveying and right-of-way work, real estate, other litigation matters and disputes, and various operational issues. Counsel I – Surveying &amp; Right of Way will work closely with the Company’s Surveying and Right-of-Way and Facilities groups and other operational personnel, advising on day-to-day surveying and right-of-way matters; preserving and protecting the Company’s fee and easement property rights; negotiating easements and consents to encroach; assisting with land acquisition for major and other projects; and handling disputes with landowners, governmental entities, and other authorities, entities, and stakeholders. Counsel I – Surveying &amp; Right of Way will also manage outside counsel in litigated and administrative proceedings involving such matters, as well certain other litigation matters as needed. Counsel I – Surveying &amp; Right of Way will report to the Associate General Counsel – Litigation and join a team that includes a Counsel II – Surveying &amp; Right of Way and a Litigation Paralegal.</b><br> <br> <b>We want you to know</b><br> CenterPoint Energy and its predecessor companies have been in business for more than 150 years. We strive for an inclusive work environment across all levels that is reflective of the available workforce in the communities we serve.<br> <br> <b>What we bring to you</b></p> <ul> <li>Competitive pay</li> <li>Paid training</li> <li>Benefits eligibility begins on your first day</li> <li>Subsidized metro and parking discounts</li> <li>Flexible work schedule, paid holidays and paid time off<br> </li> <li>Access to discounts at fitness clubs and an on-site wellness center at our headquarters in Houston</li> <li>Professional growth and development programs including tuition reimbursement</li> <li>401(k) Savings Plan featuring a company match dollar-for-dollar up to 6% and a company contribution of 3% regardless of your contribution with immediate 100% vesting.<br> <br> <b>To be successful in this role you will:</b></li> <li>Must possess a working knowledge of real estate and property law, including eminent domain and condemnation proceedings, and federal, state, and local regulations, rules, and requirements related to same. </li> <li>Responsibilities will include supporting our business with regard to land use and facilities including capital investments, transactions, negotiations, and disputed matters related to surveying and right-of-way work (including land acquisition and conveyances (sales, leases, transfers, easements, licenses, grants, gifts, attachments, rights of way, and title work), advising our business and negotiating agreements on various relocation issues with governmental and other entities; and managing disputes and litigation related to same (encroachments, trespass, nuisance, infringement, condemnation, etc.)). </li> <li>Provide timely assessments and updates on surveying and right-of-way and other matters for legal department management. </li> <li>Advise and counsel internal company departments and business units on matters within area of responsibility.</li> <li>Develop, coordinate, and provide training on surveying and right-of-way risks to the business and other functions, and collaborate with other departments to prevent, identify, investigate, and resolve such issues, and take appropriate corrective and preventative actions.</li> <li>Serve as the supervising authority over outside counsel retained on matters within area of responsibility.</li> <li>Responsible for other litigation-related matters as assigned, including general business, commercial and other litigation and handling and assisting on various types of general litigation claims and non-party subpoenas; advising on legislative initiatives; preparing and delivering legal training; providing any other legal service related to litigation, disputes, and general Company operations; and supporting team and department strategy, initiatives, and projects.</li> <li>Also responsible for advising on insurance issues related to the foregoing.</li> </ul> </div> <p></p> <div> <p><b><br> Basic Qualifications:</b></p> <ul> <li>Education: Requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a J.D. (doctor of jurisprudence) degree from an accredited law school. </li> <li>Must be admitted to practice law in the State of Texas and have minimum of three (3) years of litigation and/or surveying and right-of-way experience in a law firm, as in-house counsel, or in a corporate land department.</li> <li>Able to complete at least the State Bar’s required minimum hours of accredited continuing legal education (CLE) during each compliance year.</li> </ul> <p><b>Preferred Experience:</b></p> <ul> <li>Experience in energy and utilities, including with gas and electric transmission and distribution work.<br> </li> </ul> <h1 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>#LI-JC1 #LI-CNP</b></h1> </div> <div></div> <div> <div> <b><br> This contractor and subcontractor shall abide by the requirements of 41 CFR §§ 60-1.4(a), 60-300.5(a), and 60-741.5(a).
