About the team**
Within the Shopify legal team, the Financial Solutions Product Legal team
counsels the business units that are responsible for Shopify’s financial
solutions products and services. We provide legal support on innovative new
products in heavily regulated industries, and our work is challenging, varied,
and constantly evolving.
**About you**
We’re looking for a strategic, passionate, and dedicated senior financial
services/fintech/banking lawyer. The ideal candidate is someone who is excited
by the idea of building out a fast paced legal team.
Success at Shopify requires intellect, humility and a sense of humor. You need
to take the work seriously, but not take yourself too seriously. The work is
fast-paced and intense, so being able to balance that pressure with some

**Responsibilities**
* Integrate with a diverse legal team responsible for product counseling in connection with Shopify’s broad range of financial solutions product offerings
* Advise clients and key stakeholders on complex legal issues, marketing and operational matters, and business strategy; and manage/assess risk in connection with financial solutions products
* Proactively manage large-scale projects and ‘go to market’ launches with long-term goals
* Identify and manage cross-functional strategic initiatives related to financial solutions products
* Build positive and highly collaborative relationships across legal teams at Shopify, including our Commercial Services, Regulatory, Compliance, Privacy, Litigation, Intellectual Property and Trust & Safety teams
* Advise on the regulatory and product-impacting aspects of commercial negotiations with strategic partners
Qualifications
*
A J.D. or L.L.B. with a license to practice law in the United States or in
Canada
* 10+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally having started out at a law firm, followed by substantial in-house experience
* Substantial experience counseling on financial services regulatory and compliance matters, with a preference for candidates with experience in payments and lending in the fintech space
* Proven ability to create strategy and vision, as well as manage the execution of work
* Exceptional business judgment, analytical thinking, problem-solving and relationship-building skills
* Comfort with ambiguity- we are looking for someone who can collaborate across multiple areas in order to achieve common organizational objectives
* Capability to work with all levels of people both cross-functionally and globally
* A desire to work on an agile team providing pragmatic advice and guidance to product, business, and operations teams that are moving very quickly
* Experience managing external legal counsel
* Experience working in a high growth organization looking to scale and build
