THE OPPORTUNITY: Seyfarth Shaw is seeking a Labor and Employment Counsel to join our Seyfarth Managed Services group. This Counsel role is a reduced schedule, salaried position designed to be flexible on location, and is a “remote” (working from home, even post-pandemic lockdown) position with access to any of our local offices as needed. This is an exceptional and rare opportunity for experienced lawyers who do not seek to be in a partner-track position, but who want to continue to do sophisticated legal work with direct client involvement. As Counsel, candidates must be very comfortable handling a single-plaintiff employment lawsuit from start to finish with minimal oversight. In this role, Counsel will routinely interface directly with clients and Firm partners, as well as provide litigation recommendations and develop defense strategy. A Counsel will be dedicated to a somewhat limited number of client portfolios of employment work, such that the lawyer will become immersed in the business needs of a particular industry or industries and will be able to develop a deep knowledge of a client’s preferences, as well as grow the client relationship. The Counsel will be responsible for handling and litigating such clients’ portfolios within a particular geographic region, in addition to working directly with the relevant relationship partners to foster a stronger client relationship. THE DAY-TO-DAY: A Seyfarth Managed Services Counsel is responsible for leading, managing, and/or supporting legal matters relating to Single-Plaintiff Litigation and Administrative Charges. Lawyers in this role will handle matters in federal and state courts, and before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and perhaps the Department of Labor, as well as other federal, state, and local administrative agencies, with minimal oversight. They will have the ability to handle a practice that includes both overseeing EEOC Charges, including defending investigations, preparing position statements, defending clients in fact-finding conferences and on-site visits, representing clients in mediations and conciliations, and negotiating settlements, as well as directly managing single-plaintiff litigation, including drafting responsive pleadings, handling all aspects of the discovery process (including taking and defending depositions), drafting motions and briefs, including motions for summary judgment, and occasionally attending and handling arbitrations. Occasional travel, both in-state and out-of-state, may be required. YOU HAVE: · 8+ years of increasingly responsible employment law experience, preferably on the defense side. · Experience handling a single-plaintiff employment lawsuit from start to finish with minimal oversight. · Top law firm experience. · Excellent academic credentials. · Stellar analytical skills; and strong verbal and written communication skills. · Admission to the state in which you are applying WHAT WE PROVIDE: We provide competitive salary and benefits at all levels. We provide comprehensive training, CLE initiatives, Seyfarth University, industry credentialing, and hands-on learning by working side-by-side with our partners. We invest in our attorneys to advance in their careers by providing opportunities for substantive client contact as well as significant involvement in case strategy and management. We are also proud to be an influential leader in inclusion and diversity. The firm has been recognized for our efforts by the Human Rights Campaign, Working Mother magazine, and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. We are Mansfield 4.0+ certified, a reflection of our ongoing commitment to advancing candidates from underrepresented groups. Our Labor & Employment Department is consistently ranked at or near the top in labor and employment law rankings regionally, nationally and internationally by Chambers, The Legal 500, Law360, U.S. News & World Report: Best Lawyers, The National Law Journal, and BTI Consulting Group across multiple practice areas. Chambers USA ranks Seyfarth among the top L&E firms nationally, and we are one of only three firms that have been ranked by The Legal 500 in all six national Labor & Employment categories. We are routinely recognized by Law360 as an “Employment Practice Group of the Year,” and our employment litigation capabilities have earned us recognition in the annual BTI Litigation Outlook as a “Standout" Employment Litigation Practice.
