JOB TITLE: Director of E-Discovery DEPARTMENT: E-Discovery and Practice Support REPORTS TO: Chief Innovation Officer FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Exempt LOCATION: This position is available in the following office location(s) – Washington, DC and New York JOB SUMMARY The Director of E-Discovery (“Director”) provides leadership and direction for the Firm’s E-Discovery team and platform. As the leader of the E-Discovery team, Director provides oversight, development, and management of the Firm’s E-Discovery operations. This position requires a high level of skill in E-Discovery processes, technology, and team leadership, ensuring efficient and compliant data management in litigation and regulatory matters. As the leader of the E-Discovery team, Director is responsible for shaping the Firm’s E-Discovery process, assessing and improving the delivery of E-Discovery services to the Firm and its clients. Director is responsible for educating timekeepers and team members on best practices for E-Discovery services and data management. Director works collaboratively with attorneys, clients, support staff, and vendors to align E-Discovery practices with case strategies and organizational goals. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES* Manage the entire E-Discovery lifecycle, including data identification, collection, processing, analysis, and production. Provide strategic direction regarding E-Discovery technologies and processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Supervise and mentor the E-Discovery team, promoting professional development and skill enhancement. Collaborate with legal teams to ensure E-Discovery practices align with case requirements and strategies. Lead the selection and implementation of E-Discovery tools and software solutions. Develop and enforce E-Discovery policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure compliance with legal standards. Oversee E-Discovery policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Provide significant contribution to the internal development of the E-Discovery department, including collaborating on and documenting best practices, processes and procedures for the use of E-Discovery software systems, reviewing and testing new applications, and conducting software training. Provide technology expertise, consulting services, and guidance to legal staff and clients. Partner with the Firm’s existing enterprise vendors for strategic and technical consultation on E-Discovery case management. Collaborate with legal teams to understand requirements and provide strategic guidance. Manage and prioritize team resources to ensure timely and efficient completion. Monitor project progress and adjust plans as necessary to meet deadlines and objectives. Manage vendors to ensure accuracy and compliance with contractual terms. Manage the invoice lifecycle to ensure timely vendor payments and the manage the internal client billing process for E-Discovery services. Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment. Foster positive relationships with practice groups to enhance technology alignment and capabilities. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conduct regular team meetings and provide constructive feedback. Coordinate training on E-Discovery applications. Conduct intake meetings with case teams to determine requirements, schedules, budget concerns, and deliverables. Collaborate with case teams to develop E-Discovery service budget estimates and advise on issues affecting costs and timelines. Manage strategic advice and tactical support for the following: Data preservation Data collection, including forensically sound methodologies Data processing and culling, including collaborating with case teams on the application of analytical tools and techniques to remove non-relevant material Document hosting and review, including database design and the strategic use of analytics to increase efficiency: concept searching/clustering, email threading, near duplicate detection, TAR, etc. Manage quality testing of data deliverables, sent and received, including analysis of database load files, fielded data, images and compliance with specifications. Manage in-house, technical data management activities such as data processing, error analysis and resolution, data manipulation, loading data into database applications, building production subsets, and other database maintenance and administration. Troubleshoot E-Discovery applications and databases as necessary. Maintain defensible records of case work and provide operational briefings to department management. Independently plan and manage other projects as assigned. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Significant management experience of teams using these tools: Relativity, including Relativity Processing Brainspace and/or other data analytics / technology assisted review tools and methodologies Management experience of teams using these tools or similar ones Everchron Ready Suite Significant experience with forensic data collection best practices and tools. Builds both formal and informal professional networks.Maintains and extends networks within, across and external to organizational boundaries. Obtains and shares information, ideas and problems. Excellent oral and written communication skills to advise all levels of personnel on strategic E-Discovery issues and complex technical concepts. Proven skills with organizational/project management and attention to detail. Proven track record of managing multiple complex projects simultaneously. Creates relationships with vendor and/or alliance partners to ensure smooth workflow and meet external and internal client needs. Sets standards and monitors for improvements in shared accountabilities and capabilities. Uses business criteria and values to evaluate alternative courses of action when necessary. Makes a timely choice based on the options and information available. Identifies and acts upon opportunities for continuous improvement. Effective interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and with all levels of personnel. Ability to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced environment, operating under strict deadlines. Flexibility to work extended hours on short notice and the ability to travel is necessary. Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Experience: A minimum of ten years proven E-Discovery management experience with knowledge of the litigation process from initial filing through trial. The annualized good faith base salary range for this position is a minimum of $178,400 to a maximum of $267,600 per year. The actual salary rate offered to candidates within that range will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, years of relevant experience, education, applicable certifications, and other relevant professional licenses held, and the candidate’s overall qualifications for the position as assessed by the Firm.
