The London IP practice sits within the firm’s market leading disputes practice, with tech disputes being a key and significant area of growth. The London IP practice is currently working on several significant patent disputes, spanning life sciences and tech in particular. We have an exceptional track record of acting on the most valuable, complex and important IP disputes for a range of innovative clients. We act on some of the most complex disputes and transactions in the market. Some examples of our recent matters are provided below. Recent Matters: Technology and Telecoms: R2 semiconductor in UK High Court proceedings enforcing its patent relating to on-chip voltage regulators against Intel. Seoul Semiconductoir in UK patent validity proceedings relating to ’white light LEDs’ owned by LG Electronics. Sky in defending patent infringement litigation relating to an advertising data collection system. a consumer electronics and telecoms business in FRAND negotiations and strategy against a number of high-profile competitor telecoms patent owners, as well as non-practising entities. a media and telecoms company in relation to a patent infringement dispute concerning audio codecs, and a related contractual dispute with a chipset manufacturer. an energy company in relation to ownership of patents concerning compressed natural gas (CNG) technology. an energy and construction company in relation to procurement of non-OEM spare parts for gas turbines. a global provider of financial markets data and infrastructure on an $1.4bn allegation of breach of contract and alleged under-licensing of software products licensed by SAP, a major IT software vendor. a software development company in relation to the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and other technologies in the software development lifecycle. Life Sciences: Biogen in relation to European patent litigation strategy relating to Tecfidera (dimethyl fumarate), its treatment for multiple sclerosis. Millenium Pharmaceuticals in relation to the pan-European defence of Velcade (bortezomib) for the treatment of multiple myeloma and mantel cell lymphoma. A confidential client in relation to disputes relating to mRNA vaccine technology. Foundation Medicine in coordinating its defence relating to allegations of patent infringement concerning its next generation in vitro genetic testing and tumour mutation profiling product. Ariosa Diagnostics in defending it against claims for patent infringement in multiple jurisdictions brought by Illumina concerning Ariosa’s leading non-invasive prenatal test that analyses cell-free DNA (the Harmony® test). Gilead Sciences on patent litigation against Idenix in relation to Gilead’s Heptatitis C treatment, sofosbuvir. Gilead Sciences on UK and European patent litigation in relation to Gilead’s HIV treatment, bictegravir. Sanofi on various matters relating to issues concerning patents and regulatory exclusivity. F Hoffmann-La Roche on multiple patent litigation matters over several decades, including recently in relation to Avastin (bevacizumab) on the issue of Arrow declarations in the UK AbbVie on global patent strategy (ex US) and in UK litigation relating to its blockbuster drug Humira. Consumer: Unilever in defending it against a claim under section 40 of the Patents Act 1977 by a former employee (Professor Shanks) for compensation in respect of inventions made during the course of his employment before the UK-IPO and multiple subsequent appeals that ultimately resulted in a decision from the Supreme Court. a global consumer electronics business by assisting it with its enforcement actions against counterfeit products in the UK. Primary objectives: HSF London IP is looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious individual to: Advise and assist clients on patent disputes. Develop long-term client relationships in the key growth areas identified above. Deliver excellent client service and manage and deliver discrete pieces of legal work. Make an effective contribution to the firm’s work by aiming to meet and exceed target hours. Build a solid foundation of commercial and legal expertise within a chosen area of law and strengthen relationships with clients, frequently acting as a direct point of contact. Qualifications, skills and experience: Qualified/admitted legal practitioner in relevant jurisdiction. One to four years of practice experience, however we are open to considering candidates with more or less experience. Relevant experience in IP disputes and patent litigation in particular. An ideal candidate would, in addition to having a genuine interest in innovation and technology, have a science background. Strong legal skills, including drafting, negotiation and project management skills; foundation level people management and business development skills. Good understanding of law firm profitability and key drivers for financial efficiency; and ability to help manage costs and budgets.
