Stoel Rives

About Stoel Rives and the Environment, Land Use, and Natural Resources Practice Expanding our expertise is one of Stoel Rives’ priorities in its strategic plan, and our nationally recognized Environment, Land Use and Natural Resources practice is a key source of our strength. We represent major businesses in the agribusiness, forest products, mining, chemical processing, and renewable energy industries. As part of the team, you will have the opportunity to build and maintain strong relationships with agency officials and industry associations and you will have the opportunity to work on interesting, long-term projects with established clients. If you are interested in working with a group of collaborative, hard-working, and dedicated lawyers and staff, this is the place for you. Role Overview Stoel Rives’ Boise Office is seeking an Environmental Associate with 1 to 3 years of experience for its Environment, Land Use and Natural Resources practice. All candidates should have interest or experience in matters involving environmental laws and agency interactions, e.g., compliance counseling, permitting projects, or enforcement defense. The ideal candidate will enjoy complex legal and factual analyses requiring problem solving and critical thinking. This attorney will assist senior attorneys who navigate our clients through routine and complex environmental compliance obligations, including obtaining permits (e.g., air, waste, water), compliance counseling (e.g., release reporting, air quality compliance, stormwater management, waste characterization and disposal), auditing and compliance program development, cleanup actions, responding to government information requests, defending investigations and enforcement actions, and citizen suit/toxic tort defense. This attorney will gain exposure to the environmental aspects of real estate and corporate transactions, including identifying and allocating environmental risks, negotiating and drafting environmental provisions of transaction documents, and obtaining and reviewing environmental site assessments and other diligence materials. Associates in our group enjoy close collaboration, working in teams, leadership opportunities, developing deep expertise on issues important to our clients, and meaningful opportunities to build connections with clients early in their career. Skills Needed to Be Effective in This Role We pride ourselves in forming diverse teams with a wide array of interpersonal and professional attributes. We don’t expect any one person to embody all of these skills, but the below serves to describe our ideal team player. If you have many of these skills, and are enthusiastic to learn, we encourage you to apply. • Experience with, or demonstrable interest in, environmental and natural resource issues and environmental litigation; • Excellent written and oral communication skills; • Good judgment, responsiveness, and perseverance; • Strong intellectual curiosity; • Ability to work independently with local and remote supervision; • A commitment to collaboration to achieve client and team success; • Courage to ask questions and to try new things; • Agency experience or a technical background (preferred); • JD from an accredited university; and • Active membership in or commitment to applying for the Idaho State bar.
