<br> The Toll Public Interest Center (TPIC) harnesses the talent, expertise, and resources of Penn Carey Law to engage in high-impact public service with local, national, and global communities. TPIC ensures that students are trained and supervised in wide-ranging, substantive, impactful law-related pro bono work. <br> POSITION OVERVIEW
<br> TPIC’s ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR PRO BONO IMPACT reports to the Assistant Dean and Executive Director of TPIC, and collaborates with other TPIC staff members, Penn Carey Law staff colleagues, faculty, students, University and community partners, managing four key responsibilities: directing the wide-ranging operations of Penn Carey Law’s robust community partner (external) pro bono placements; tracking and reporting the depth and breadth of student pro bono accomplishments; and advising students on their pro bono planning while monitoring student compliance with the Penn Carey Law pro bono requirement; guide students in meeting state bar pro bono requirements. The Associate Director oversees all aspects of measuring, managing, and messaging the Law School’s pro bono impact to students, staff, faculty, alumni, funders, and other audiences as needed.

Responsibilities
</div>
<div>
Manage all student pro bono work that takes place outside of student pro bono projects (i.e. external pro bono opportunities).
</div>
<div>
Develop short-term pro bono initiatives that enable students to perform pro bono service remotely. These, primarily research-based initiatives, will assist legal services agencies in Philadelphia and in more remote geographic areas build their capacity to provide information and assistance to their clients.
</div>
<div>
Provide supplemental supervision for students in external pro bono placements when community partners have limited or no attorney staffing or would significantly benefit from supplemental supervision.
</div>
<div>
Create temporary, short-term assistance, pro bono initiatives, sometimes referred to as “pop up pro bono.” These “pop-ops” offer students the opportunity to deliver limited legal services to underserved communities in Philadelphia and beyond.
</div>

Advise students on their pro bono planning while monitoring student compliance with the Penn Carey Law pro bono requirement.
</div>
<div>
Collaborate with TPIC colleagues to inform students about the pro bono requirement and the many opportunities to engage in pro bono legal service.

Meet with students to discuss their plans for engaging in pro bono legal work.
</div>

Partner with TPIC colleagues on tracking student pro bono compliance with the Law School requirement, and on providing additional support and counseling to students when needed.

Develop tools to compile qualitative and quantitative data regarding the quality and quality of pro bono service performed by students.

Develop assessments for students, community partners, and supervising attorneys, to evaluate how all are experiencing student pro bono service, and to identify ongoing opportunities to modify or expand service initiatives.

Collaborate with Communications and other law school colleagues to publish comprehensive reports and publicity regarding the impact of student pro bono legal service.

Manage all matters related to student compliance with state bar pro bono requirements.

Stay well-informed regarding the New York and any other state bar’s pro bono requirements.

Keep students well-informed of the requirements; advise and support them with compliance.

Develop efficient systems for assisting students and community partners in completing all documentation relating to state bar pro bono requirements.

Collaborate with other law school departments as needed to help students meet these requirements.

Obtain and maintain the necessary credentials to become a notary for purposes of notarizing the requisite documents.

Qualifications
</div>
<div>
Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A commitment to social justice and a desire to focus on expanding access to justice through pro bono service is essential. Candidates must be licensed to practice law, preferably in Pennsylvania, and be willing and able to become a notary public. Excellent organizational, communication, and advocacy skills are required. A strong interest in nurturing student development is essential, as well as a commitment to and experience in addressing the legal needs of underserved clients and communities. Clinical, externship, and/or pro bono experience in law school is preferred. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work diplomatically with multiple constituencies including employers, faculty, alumni, current students, prospective students, and colleagues. Candidates should be highly motivated and possess strong personal initiative and drive. The ideal candidate will be a team player who has an established track record of collaboration in the workplace. We emphasize individual responsibility while requiring strong team support.
