**JOB PURPOSE:**
This position is a full-time, one-year fixed term (non-renewable) professional
internship designated as University Counsel. It is designed to provide an
earlier-career attorney with the experience required to work towards obtaining
a permanent higher education attorney position by helping more senior
attorneys in the Stanford University Office of the General Counsel (OGC)
deliver legal services. This internship is located in Stanford, CA (not
remote). In this role, the attorney may work on matters involving Stanford
University, Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital,
University HealthCare Alliance, Packard Children’s Health Alliance and
affiliates. The position reports to the Deputy General Counsel for Academic,
Student and Athletic Affairs and Managing Attorney.
**CORE DUTIES:**
May include:
* assisting in-house attorneys in providing legal guidance and representation to clients;
* collaborating with attorneys and clients in litigation;
* researching a variety of issues;
* drafting and reviewing contracts;
* preparing training materials on a variety of higher education level issues;
* working to improve the OGC’s systems;
* other duties as assigned
**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:**
**Education & Experience:**
* Law degree from an ABA accredited law school and strong academic credentials
* Admitted to a Bar within the United States (California State Bar preferred)
* At least two years of legal experience at a major law firm, in-house legal department and/or government
* Strong research and writing skills
* Strong commitment to higher education
* Ability to manage competing deadlines
**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:**
* Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
* Frequently sitting.
* Occasionally stand/walk, use a telephone, writing by hand.
* Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts.
**WORKING CONDITIONS:**
* Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
* Ability to work in-person at least three days per week at the Stanford Office of the General Counsel in Stanford, CA
