THE OPPORTUNITY: The Pro Bono and Philanthropy (PBP) Partner will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Firm’s pro bono, community service, and charitable giving programs. The PBP Partner will work directly with all of the various Firm committees and interest groups who participate in these programs, as well as with outside interest groups, such as charities and pro bono referral agencies. THE DAY-TO-DAY: On any given day you will: Oversee the work of the PBP Manager and members of the Pro Bono Committee to administer the pro bono program, including, for example, monitoring budgets, hours, and supervisor involvement in pro bono matters; collecting, maintaining, and internally and externally reporting pro bono data; and notifying attorneys of pro bono opportunities. Understand the process and criteria for approval of pro bono matters, and assist attorneys who are seeking to open new pro bono matters. Develop and maintain good relationships with the Firm’s pro bono referral agencies, and look for ways for the Firm to expand and improve those relationships. Attend conferences and meetings with other firms’ pro bono coordinators and pro bono interest groups. Try to find pro bono opportunities that match people’s interests and also try to place pro bono opportunities that legal aid organizations send the Firm. Supervise and consult on pro bono legal matters as needed. Act as a consultant to corporate legal departments seeking assistance with establishing pro bono programs or seeking pro bono opportunities. Assist attorneys with client presentations regarding pro bono, charitable giving, or community service. Understand and be able to answer questions regarding the Firm’s timekeeping policies for pro bono, community service, and charitable activities. Work with any local Charitable Giving Committees and the Seyfarth Shaw Charitable Foundation Board to administer the Firm’s charitable giving programs. Oversee the work of the PBP Manager, which includes obtaining and sending grant checks; answering questions and providing information; processing grant requests; and preparing reports and materials for meetings. Maintain and keep up-to-date the data and records of the Seyfarth Shaw Charitable Foundation. Understand and be able to answer questions regarding the criteria for charitable grants. Coordinate with Marketing, Human Resources, Talent Development, Recruiting, Inclusion & Diversity and any other departments when the interests of those departments intersect with the Firm’s pro bono and philanthropy efforts. Internally and externally communicate the Firm’s pro bono, community service, and charitable giving activities, including overseeing content on InSeyt and the external website. Present awards for pro bono and community service at office gatherings, as appropriate and in coordination with the office. Represent the Firm at charity events when possible. Attend partner meetings and give reports at various Firm gatherings, including partner meetings, department meetings, and office meetings. YOU HAVE: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as the Partner will be working with attorneys and staff across all offices of the Firm, as well as with external interest groups such as charities and pro bono referral agencies. Specifically, the Partner must be adept at saying “no” while not alienating people. Strong organization, planning, and follow-up skills. Good judgment, as well as the ability to deal with different personality types and to be professional in difficult situations. The ability to be aware of stakeholders and the ability to keep the right people informed of developments. The ability to understand when to handle matters and when to delegate to the PBP Manager or people in other departments. A JD. Candidates must either be a partner in a law firm or have partner-level experience. Education in non-profit management or philanthropy is a plus. Please note: This position is Firmwide. Preferred location is Chicago. Extensive travel to conferences and other Seyfarth offices will be required.
